Reading in Sunlight
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:52:40 PM »
???Is the new Kindle Fire as easy to read in sunlight as a regular Kindle?  I have an Ipad2 and usually download books onto my kindle and my ipad2 so I can use the kindle outside and during the day and the ipad2 in low light.  Since the Fire is being compared to a streamlined ipad I am concerned that, should I purchase a Fire, I won't be able to read my books outside....cause you CANNOT do that with an ipad.

the Kindle Fire has a backlit ips screen, not eink like a regular Kindle so I doubt t will be as easy to read as an eink Kindle in daylight.  With that said, there are other factors that could make the Kindle Fire more readable in sunlight than an ipad2 such as screen glossiness and contrast of the screen but we won't really know about that until after it is out and is tested.  I certainly would not expect the Kindle Fire to be anywhere near as readable as eink however.  That's the price of color with current technology. On the flipside, movies and color magazines will look much better on the Kindle Fire as long as you're not in bright sunlight.

That is the trade off with the Fire.  Great in the dark, but lousy in the sun.  At this price, you can afford to have an e-ink reader and a Fire!  You are covered either way.  You can sync the two devices go from one to the other and never loose your place.

I should do a poll on that.  It would be interesting to see how many people have both a color and black and white Kindle for exactly that reason.  As you say since they're always synced it would make a lot of sense.

I read a lot on my b/w Kindle, and have read on my Fire (not in sunlight).  The Fire has not bothered me by being backlit.  I don't tend to  read much over 45 minutes at a time.  Believe I will probably do most of reading on my b/w Kindle.
