Watching Movies off-line

I have been travelling a lot and have started to use my Kindle to watch movies on the plane.  I download them (rentals . . . cannot download Amazon Prime videos) the night before and watch them while in the air.   Lately, however, the movie fails to load.  I either get a blank screen or a cryptic error message (which says try again, which I can do ad infinitum with same result). 

Does anyone know what has changed?   Do you have to be online to "start" the rental period?  Or online to start playing the movie altogether?
